Mario Tricoci and vitaminwater® Present: The 2011 InspireDesign Show

Fashion Focus Chicago was off to a successful start with the Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) Show - but, it was time for a bit of competition. Enter: the InspireDesign Show presented by Mario Tricoci and vitaminwater® - also known as the Mario, Make Me a Model show. This runway event blends a bit of healthy competition and fashion into one all-out fashion fete. Five model finalists compete for a chance to win a contract with a top Chicago fashion agency, while talented designers showcase their collections for us to drool over. Sounds good to me.

The five model hopefuls:

The models competing for the contract walked in the show as their final challenge - right alongside the pros. Competing for the win were (see above - L to R): Juni Park, Lynn Tatge, Zachary Ross Alexandra Cangelosi and Mercedes Johnson - each hoping to be chosen as "Mario's Models." Showcased on the runway, were five stellar collections - and I have to say: from front row ... they all looked quite amazing. (So what? I'm bragging.) Check 'em out:

IMAGINARY PEOPLE

Inspired by what they considered a lack of accessible clothing both well designed and versatile enough to accommodate their wardrobe desires, Telo Dunne and Olivia Shanks launched Imaginary people in the fall of 2009. Their aim with Imaginary People is to make highly functional, versatile and elegant pieces that are as lovely to wear as they are to look at. They believe that wardrobe basics can be fashion forward. The line is built around a core collection of creatively reinvented wardrobe staples made of slinky jersey knits and comfy cotton blends that are carried cover and added to each season. The label’s individual pieces stand strong on their own, pair cleverly with one another and complement the basics that most women already own.

MICHELLE TAN

Michelle Tan was interested in fashion design at an early age. She took her first sewing class when she was in fourth grade. After one sewing lesson, she designed her first outfit by using newspaper as pattern papers. After graduating with a bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design from International Academy of Technology and Designs in 1999, she took six months off to travel to Asia searching for fabrics and yarns for her first collection.

Michelle Tan launched her line under her name in Fall 2000. Tan’s devotion to deconstruction and details has made her Chicago’s fastest growing designer. In 2000 she won the Style Maker and Rule Breaker Award by Fashion Group International, and in 2001 she won the Marshal Field’s Distinction Award and sold her line to Marshall Field’s. Michelle Tan sells to over 60 stores across the US, Canada, and Japan. In June 2006 she opened her first flagship boutique in Wicker Park, and in 2010 opened her second boutique in Downtown Block 37.

J.CHEIKH

Founded in 2009 by husband and wife team of Cheikh Lam and Sophie Lin. Lin, with a BFA from The School Of The Art Institute of Chicago was working in womenswear when she teamed up with her husband, Cheikh to create looks that are inspired by his longtime appreciation of European streetwear. J.Cheikh creates clothes that the contemporary gentleman would enjoy wearing on a daily basis. By updating classic pieces with surprising fabrication and color choices, J.Cheikh stands by the idea that men should have it all. There is no such thing as sacrificing style for comfort. J.Cheikh embodies both qualities, making the line unpretentiously luxurious.

Based in Chicago, the brand focuses on modernizing the fundamentals of classic menswear. The J.Cheikh team has always thought it important to support the local fashion and manufacturing community so the line is not only designed in Chicago, the materials are also sourced in the city and the manufacturing is also produced locally. J.Cheikh draws inspiration from the unique mix of European silhouettes with American ease. Each season fabric and color combinations are unexpected and sleek.

NARCISSE

Created September 2000, Narcisse Designs, a couture fashion company, each artistic piece is handcrafted in order to make our customers feel glamorous and unique. Narcisse customers are fashion forward individuals who want to create a matchless impression. Our pieces are not products but investments, like art. If you buy a dress from Narcisse, you can wear it for years since each piece is custom made staying true to the "art" of couture not the trends of this years fashions. We create haute couture that is classically sensual and uninhibited and that is how we want our clients to feel.

Razor sharp silhouettes, slinky dramatic gowns with unique embellishments and defining details, shape Narcisse’s Latest Collection. REDDOLL

Tatyana was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and in 1992, her family immigrated to America. She always loved the arts, movies, and fashion, but kept it to her, it was not a career option in the family. It was all inside though, brewing. Sewing was in her blood and her mother was a seamstress in Ukraine and worked in the factory, nothing glamorous. In 2003 Tatyana moved to Chicago, and met an artist that suggested to take up sewing and creating.

That is exactly what she did and started to nurture what she knew was her gift. In October 2009 she was the Fresh Face of Gen Art Chicago and after, she committed to herself to her fashion career full time. In August 2010, she moved to New York, to pursue her career further.

The collection is inspired by the timeless movie classic Casablanca meets reddoll. There is a balance between the styles and periods of time that Tatyana loves! The hand work that is involved in the process with the combination of high quality fabric makes this collection romantic and sophisticated.

After each of the fifty looks walked the runway, it was time for Mr. Mario Tricoci to announce the winner. Little did the audience know, Mario had a different plan in mind: two winners. (That tricky hair-loving man.) You could see the models' holding their breath as he talked and I can only imagine what they were saying in their heads as he continued to do so.

Soon enough - it was time to announce the winner...s. After a pause, Mr. Tricoci called Juni Park and Mercedes Johnson as the two that would share the title.

(Is it bad that I wanted them to fight for the trophy? Ok, ok - I'll behave.)

The girls took an excited final walk down the runway - each clutching part of the trophy - and Mario kindly congratulated the other models. It was a gorgeous show to watch - and I would be upset with myself if I didn't mention the amazing producers: Jennifer Wisniewski and Lisa Marie McComb - who produced a beautifully flawless runway show. (Such pros!) Congratulations to all the models - especially the 2011 winners, Juni and Mercedes!

Truly another fantastic Fashion Focus Chicago event and great exposure for our Windy City - which proved true to its' name as we were rushed out into the night, where the fifty mile per hour winds awaited us.

Clearly Chicago doesn't care that my hair is always part of the outfit.

The time has come for another round of coverage for Fashion Focus Chicago! Some of you may be wondering what took me so long to get posting after the shows - and I'll tell you: I think I have literally just woken up after a week of events. I was able to make it to ten events last week - yes, ten - and I have found some time to post about the two tent shows that I was able to attend in Millennium Park. So - let's get to it...

One of my very favorite shows each year is "The Designers of the Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) Runway Show presented by Macy's." This year was no different, with a stellar showing from the past DIR (Designers in Residence) - many of whom I have had the opportunity to work with professionally at Agency Galatea - and the current 2011 DIR. We saw the work of a whopping fifteen designers walk the runway, dominated by womenswear with a total of twelve collections and three menswear collections. The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) is one of my favorite organizations in Chicago, as it helps to "bridge the gap between design school and entrepreneurship" by offering designers the "workspace and tools to establish and grow their companies." (Not to mention - a ton of good buzz to help expose their work to a market beyond Chicago.)

I arrived a bit later than expected (thank you, Rachel Yeomans for the text!) and got settled in my press seat with my bud, Kate Jacobsen. (Another shout-out to Kamal Bosamia (Media Relations Manager, Macy's) and the amazing Lara Miller (Executive Director, CFI) for their wonderful accommodations!) Before we could scope out the printed list of looks - the show had begun. What followed was a colorful mix of fabrics, patterns and cuts that spoke to many different customers. I was especially pleased to see a great line of plus sized designs - along with some of my old favorites - who will remain unnamed ... I blog fair, people. (But, you know who you are!)

In case you weren't able to attend - I would like to bring you back to that day with me by posting some looks below and a bit of info about each designer. Ready for the show?

A Very Merry "Fashion's Night Out"

It can be said that anything Anna Wintour creates/endorses/promotes turns into fashion gold. Well - I said it ... not sure if you agree - but seriously? That women is a powerful fashion genius. Moving on..

In New York - 2009 - Ms. Wintour (be polite - or she'll eat you) - started "Fashion's Night Out", "as a means to encourage consumers to shop and support the fashion industry during the tough economic climate." (wikifashion) Now, just two years later, FNO is celebrated in over 250 cities (and in NYC alone, over 1000 retailers continue the new tradition.)

This year - Chicago was no exception - with events popping up all over town to celebrate our love of fashion. Michigan Avenue was buzzing with stylish fetes this year - as was Oak Street and so many other retailers across the city. (In fact, the new TOPSHOP|TOPMAN opened to the public on September 8th - which Chicago clearly has a huge crush on already.)

I was honored to be able to attend The 900 Shops FNO event called "Fame, Fashion & Flavor: 900's Night Out" - which was hosted by ... waaaaaait for it: THE Brad Goreski. *swoons - passes out - hits head - dreams of Brad - wakes up again to continue writing this post* ... Where was I? Oh yes ... the event was also sponsored by my buds at CS Magazine, the wonderful women at Julie Watson Style, Gilt City, Fig Media (shout out to my favorite fashion DJ - Megan Taylor!), Event Creative, eDrop-Off (who had an amazing photo booth), Agency Galatea (so proud of my girls and guys!) and many other fantastic local businesses that gave their time, energy and services to make this outstanding event come to life. The result? An absolute fashion success - and in my opinion - one of the best parties on the Avenue. (Biased? Maybe - but I don't lie - so that makes me right.)

Once my models had walked the runway and the event was settling down - I joined a group of friends to head over to support one of my favorite Chicago shops - Sofia Vintage on Oak Street. We walked over (everyone looking dashing - like it was Fashion Christmas) to check out who was "Living Lovely" at 72 East Oak. We arrived and were greeted by many familiar faces. I ran into one of my favorite Chicago fashion photographers, Bryan Whitely - and then was thrilled to see the lovely Ciara Newby. We went outside to get some air (Sofia was hoppin!) and ran into Mr. Ian Doran - who had just come from work at Jack Spade (lucky.) The crowd outside was fantastic - such a mix of styles and conversations and handshakes.

As I departed for home, I decided to leave my headphones in my pocket and take it all in. I strolled up Oak Street and then continued South on Rush. Everywhere I looked, there were glimpses of fashion - like an entire city had taken an extra few minutes to put on something
special this evening. The city was buzzing with an energy that was quite different than any other day when I have walked these streets. I smiled as I strolled, a bit slower than normal - hands in my pockets, grinning like a child on Christmas morning.

Only - this was different - this was Fashion Christmas...

...and this perfectly stylish night was my gift.

A Night in Paris, to Welcome London: The TOPSHOP|TOPMAN Private Dinner

After attending the fantastic TOPSHOP|TOPMAN private shopping event - it was soon time to head over to Paris Club for the private dinner, hosted by Sir Philip Green. (What a private day I was having.) I was only allowed to arrive solo, so I threw the bowtie back on in the office and began my way over to the event.

Once I arrived - I was checked in and given a small card with a number on it ... a table number. I memorized the number '11' and did what any solo party-goer would do - I located the bar. A handsome bartender walked over and I asked him what the deal was tonight. His response? ... "It's open bar, sir." ... "Oh?", I thought - "It's that kind of a party?" I order a whiskey/coke and before the I'm-alone-and-it's-awkward set in, Emma Arnold of Tres Awesome (one of my favorite fashion blogs) nudged me on the shoulder. She was a welcomed sight - with her cool, calm demeanor and leather jacket-over a t-shirt-over a dress hotness. It was about to begin...

Before I could could make that slurping sound with my straw (more whiskey, please) - we had a full-on party going. I saw Samantha Saifer (CS Magazine) across the room - looking amazing (those pants?! - love.) ... James Goeke and I spotted each other, both raised a 'hello hand' and he came by to gossip (P.s. LOVE him, James!) ... not far behind him, his wifey Jessica Zweig (Cheeky Chicago) came over for a smooch/hug combo ... I finally met the handsome Mr. Anderson Bell (FanFueled Tickets) and ordered him another Stella, as he told us about how he keeps his girlish figure ... my obsessions walked in shortly after - Christina Fan (C/FAN) and Ms. April Francis (AF - Refinery29 Contributor - Total Fox) - #CallMeYouTwo ... Getting the point? The room was packed with Chicago's most stylish and elite - and there I was ... somehow invited to be in the middle of it all.

The original time for dinner (8p) had come and passed (though, most of us didn't notice - see: open bar.) As it approached 8:30p. I heard someone say "Well - Miley's not here yet." I'm sorry - what?! At this point, my stomach is Not. Happy. with said Miley Cyrus, who is holding us back from quite a delicious, fancy dinner. So ... we wait. Around 9p. it is time and I begin the search for No. 11.

Arriving at my table, I was delighted to be sitting with some of my favorite Chicagoans. I just about squealed when Molly Each (Michigan Avenue Magazine) scooted in to my right - love that women. To my left - Ms. Bridget White (eDrop-Off) sat down (looking as beautiful as ever) ... minutes later, we'd be swapping childhood stories and literally holding back tears - xo, B-dub! Across from me sat a stellar lineup of Chicago's finest men: Matt Lee (Editor-in-Chief of The Men's Book) - which, to me, is liking sitting across from Oprah ... Jason Berngard (Market Lead, Gilt City), whom is marrying my girlfriend, Sam Saifer (don't tell him) ... and Michael Corrigan (Zapwater Communications) - THE man of the hour (as far as I'm concerned), who had a hand in planning the entire night. Excellent work, Michael!

After everyone was settled, watered and wined - it was time to hear from Sir Philip Green - the man behind TOPSHOP|TOPMAN. He stood and spoke kindly - telling us how thrilled he was to be in Chicago and how much he was looking forward to growing his business here. After a few words - we raised our glasses and had a cheers to TOPSHOP|TOPMAN ... and rightfully so.

So - there we were - drinking fantastic wine, eating shrimp the size of my hand and having conversations that I wanted to last all night. I could have thought of no better way to end the summer - surrounded by amazing, hardworking (and really good-looking) people - sipping wine - laughing and eating absolutely delicious food. I didn't think it could get any better - until dinner was over.

Full and ready to burn those calories - the crew headed upstairs to the roof - aka: Studio Paris (which I had never been) - for another round of open bar (Sir Philip - I love you) and some stellar DJ sets. There, I shook it up with Monica Dimperio (The MidWasteland), Kevin Aeh (Time Out Chicago), the handsome Ian Doran (Jack Spade) - and of course, Miley (who - by this time - had stolen someone's suspenders and thought it would be like, so funny to wear them with her outfit.)

LOOK at me, Miley!

Here was what I remember of our conversation:

Ryan: "Hi. I'm Ryan."

Miley: (in that weird voice of hers) "Hiii. I'm Miii-lay" (What? She has an accent.)

They shake hands. They dance for approximately 48 seconds. They part ways.

Shorty after this experience, I was back to my girl Bridget, shakin' it like it was Saturday. Until I realized ... it was Wednesday ... and 2a.m. ... and definitely time to go...

Kevin Aeh & Monica Dimperio:

As the cab drove through the streets of Chicago - wind whipping through the window - I thought about the truly amazing evening TOPSHOP|TOPMAN had created for us that night. Never before had I been to an event like it ... and it took a shop from across the pond to give me that experience.

As the cab driver reached my place, I had only one thought on my mind: When is the next TOPSHOP|TOPMAN opening?!

(I just hope I make the list.)

Hello, my friends ... it has certainly been too long - and I've missed you dearly. Between hustling at the agency, freelance work and a move - I have been a bit distracted from the world of the bowtie. I can't promise it wont happen again - but I can tell you I will always be back!

Speaking of being back ... I have good reason to be.

Have you heard a small whisper or tiny chatter about this little shop that opened up on Michigan Avenue? Have you?

Ok - who am I kidding? ... Ladies and gentlemen - TOPSHOP|TOPMAN IS HERE ... and boy do they know how to make a stylish scene.

I recently received an invitation in the mail to attend the TOPSHOP|TOPMAN private shopping event and was definitely intrigued. I was thrilled at the chance to check out the goods before anyone else - and since I have been a hermit lately, I couldn't think of a better excuse to shed the shell.

I arrived around lunch with my Agency Galatea boss, Marie P. Anderson - and quickly got to work checking out the merch. We started on the ground floor and combed through the women's garments. I loved the colors and textures - great styles and cuts - and decent price points. (Marie was gawking over a very Gaga-esque t-shirt with a faded cross printed on it and cut-out shoulders.)

After a few minutes - I began whining about wanting to see the TOPMAN floor and we caught the escalator up to Floor 1 for what was the beginning of many fashion heart attacks. I loved the massive visual display in the men's section and the low ceiling kind of made it feel a bit more chic - like a secret (though, real fancy) basement shop. The visuals are almost too much to take - but I'm okay with a little over-stimulation during shopping.

I can't speak on fit, as I did not yet try on the clothes - but I loved the looks that I saw. Great basic wovens (with interesting added touches) - drop-crotch jeans and slacks that slim near the ankle - and THE suit. Yes - THE suit. I had a total moment when I saw it and I think I scared Marie out of her shoes from the squeal that came out of my mouth. (Fashion heart attack alert.) I wanted to strip this maroon creation right off the mannequin - AND the bowtie. I'll say no more - have a look below. (I died.)

After a few photo opp's, courtesy of Tyler Curtis (and Matthew Reeves of www.DarkroomDemons.com) - we made it down to Level -1. First of all - "Level -1?" It's kind of unnecessary to call it that (and I kind, sort of, totally love it and want to use it in daily language to describe where I am at, should I be in a basement.) Level -1 houses walls of shoes, accessories, more garments (women's, if I remember correctly) and more gorgeous people that work at this delicious store.

After browsing every level of TOPSHOP|TOPMAN, I can safely say that I am in love. Not only is the store visually beautiful - but it adds some much needed fashion street cred to Michigan Avenue (along with the sexy new AllSaints store.) The prices are affordable and the styles are more edgy and London-ey than your average H&M. (Did I just say London-ey?) Chicago has been buzzing with word of this new shop and TOPSHOP|TOPMAN has done a very good job at creating such buzz. If you haven't had a chance to check out the store - you must. I guarantee you'll walk out with something you love - and if you're not careful, you may even catch an English accent.

Catching Up With The Bowtie...

Hello, my friends! My sincerest apologies for being gone for so long - things have been quite busy in the land of bowties. I wanted to take a moment to catch you up on my life these past couple months and get us all back on track. As you may know, I am a freelance publicist (in addition to my work at Agency Galatea) and I had the honor of promoting the Chicago Red Dress Party as the official publicist. This great cause (and exciting event) went off without a hitch on April 16, 2011. So many friends and supporters came out to 525 W. Monroe to enjoy a night of red dresses, drinks and dance floor shenanigans. Was a blast!

While I was away from the blog, I also got a chance to check out the Zamrie fashion show, featuring the design work of my new friend, Ashley Zygmunt. I had the chance to sit with Ashley for one of our Speaking of Fashion podcasts (along with fellow podcasters, Rachel Yeomans and Kari Skaflen) to learn more about her process and design aesthetic. We quickly learned that Ashley is an absolute power-house, handling every step of the design process herself (with some help from her very supportive Mom.) Another highlight that I wanted to mention was a fashion exhibition put together by my good friend Miriam Cecilia Carlson, featuring her very own line, Miriam Cecilia. My beautiful Agency Galatea runway women were featured in her show and the event was an absolute success. Miriam showed looks from her newest collection that were absolutely stunning (loved the addition of fur accents.) Always so inspiring to see Chicago designers paving the way for Chicago fashion...

To continue on the catch-up, I wanted to share another exciting event that I had the honor of hosting (with so many other fine Chicagoans) for ART CHICAGO. Just before I left for my cruise to Mexico (followed by an amazing weekend in West Hollywood), I helped to promote the after-party which took place on the rooftop on the EnV Luxury Apartments (followed by an after-after-party at Lumen.) Factio Magazine sponsored and my good friends Melissa Maynard and Henrique Kerch organized the classy affair. It was a perfect spring evening to enjoy drinks, music and good friends on a gorgeous rooftop, overlooking the stunning Chicago skyline. (Not to mention, a rowdy night at Lumen - thank you, Corzo Tequila!)...

After an inspiring week on a cruise ship, followed by the perfect weekend in West Hollywood, it was time to come back to reality. I was lucky enough to hit the ground running in Chicago and attend two fantastic restaurant openings upon my arrival. The first was for Cantina no.46, where I reunited with my friends for some delicious food and killer tequila (to bring me back to Mexico for the night!) The weather was perfect and the patio was packed with some of Chicago's finest. With a margarita in hand, I was missing the trip I had just come from, but happy to be back in my city...

After a few drinks at Cantina, I hopped a cab over to the opening of Porkchop. Like the name suggests, this new spot offers a tempting array of delicious meats, seasoned and smoked in more ways than you can count. My friend Dion Antic is the restaurant impresario behind this new opening and I was thrilled to be able to celebrate this momentous evening with him and our friends. The interior of the space is gorgeous - mason jars hang above the bar with little light bulbs, faux forest murals spread around the front VIP booth and a wall of saws cuts through the space, dividing the kitchen from the dining area. Absolutely a must-see (and must-taste) new spot in Chicago's West Loop! (P.s. If you see Dion's dog, Sid, driving his car around - please let someone know)...

Well, my friends ... I think I have you all caught up. Thank you for your patience as I keep busy and try my best to keep you informed! I'll be on a more regular schedule now that vacation is over and the summer event season begins. I look forward to the summer ahead and to hopefully running into you at one Chicago's best events...

The Chicago Fashion Incubator Announces the 2011 Designers in Residence

It was a surprisingly pleasant Chicago evening as I made my way over to The 900 Shops for one of my favorite events of the year. I pushed through the revolving doors and began my way up the escalator to the 5th floor. I collected my thoughts as I rode the steps and thought about this event, the year before...

It was March 16, 2010 - the very day that I met some of the talented individuals that I now call my friends. They were bright-eyed and nervous - ready to showcase their collections and prove to Chicago that they all had what it took to succeed as designers on a real ready-to-wear level. For the six of them, this was an opportunity of a lifetime to learn the skills that would set their careers in motion. It was also the day that I made six new friends whom I have had the opportunity to follow as they flourished in their craft - each with a dream of their own. Let me now congratulate each of you on all the blood, sweat and tears that has brought you to your Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) graduation. My friends, the class of 2010: Christina Fan (C/FAN), Donaldo Smith (Killian Gui), Jonnie Rettele (Nonnie Threads), Leah Fagan (ALIDADE), Stephanie Kuhr (Dottie’s Delights) and Miriam Cecilia Carlson (Miriam Cecilia) - I am honored to be a part of your journey...

As I approached the 5th floor, I could hear the hustle of the crowd and the set laid down by DJ Sye Young as it got louder and louder. I took the first steps through the media check-in and there I was - surrounded by my favorite fashion folk - mingling with some of Chicago's rising stars and those already shining bright. I started my night by checking out the work of my friends - the current CFI designers in residence, soon to graduate. After a few photos, hugs and conversation - it was time to make my way in to see the newest batch of designers - the class of 2011.

I walked into the open space and was immediately greeted with a dazzling set of looks created by the talented hands of Chicago's next class. Though I only met a few of the new designers, I could tell that this year would produce a stellar batch of what is to come in Chicago fashion. Models stood tall on platforms, wearing the current collections of the freshest round to join the year-long Chicago Fashion Incubator journey. Please join me in welcoming the 2011 class: Concetta Cipriano (Cettina Designs), Shavonne Dorsey (Siobhan Apparel), Eric Kipp (Eric Kipp), Kahindo Mateene (Modahnik), Taneasha Prunty (Gidi) and Crystal Simms (Crystal B. Designs.)

The 2011 Class:

Once I had a good look at the stellar collections, I was able to mix and mingle with the crowd. I bumped into a couple of designers, including one of my new favorites - menswear designer (call me bias) - and a fresh addition to the class: Mr. Eric Kipp. He walked up to me, introduced himself and told me a bit about his collection (one suit, in particular, that he was wearing was to-die-for.) His custom garments are "fully canvassed construction, hand cut, primarily hand sewn and always made in the USA." He continued, stating that he "sources fabrics exclusively from Europe’s best mills and offer more than 5,000 textile options." (All this from a newbie?) I was already impressed. He went on to describe that the ready-to-wear line he is developing as part of the CFI program will differ in make from the custom pieces shown on his website and bear a separate label. "The new garments will still be fully canvassed and feature hand sewn armhole and chest pieces, but will include more machining. The ready-to-wear line will be very masculine (but refined), very tailored and have a strong emphasis on separates as opposed to full suits." All I know - is that I want to get my hands on these suits.

After shaking Eric's hand and hearing the official introduction of the 2011 class - by two of my favorite people: Sarah Burrows (Marketing Manager at The 900 Shops) and Lara Miller (CFI Executive Director and Owner/Designer of Lara Miller Ltd.) - it was time to journey on to my next adventure. I made my way back to the escalator and took the ride down, thinking yet again what a truly amazing event this is. None other throughout the year are able to speak so fittingly to my Chicago fashion heart, as does this one. Set to inspire, teach and expose our fashion community, the Chicago Fashion Incubator program is truly an initiative that fights for the continued evolution of the fashion in our fine city. I offer my congratulations to the newest class and wish them well as they move forward to give their very own blood, sweat and tears. Just know that we are all here to offer a band-aid, wipe your brow and give a shoulder to cry on.

The fight is yours now.

Chicago Fashion Foundation's 2011 Scholarship Benefit

I am always excited when I get an invite to a Chicago Fashion Foundation (CFF) event, as I am a great supporter of initiatives to further expose the local designers in Chicago. So, when Meghan Turner, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of StyleAdmirer.com (and CFF Board Member) reached out to me to join her for the CFF’s 2011 Scholarship Benefit - the answer was an immediate 'YES!' This annual event gathered nine contestants to compete in a design contest, in the hopes of winning their share of $6500 in scholarship funds. The lucky contestants this year included Ana Laura Leon, Elaine Hoang, Emma Bottari and Meilin Schneider from the School of the Art Institute Chicago; Rebecca Lopez from Columbia College; K’Lynn Kennedy, Caitlin Lindell, Jasmine Mitchell and O’Ron Manson all from the International Academy of Design & Technology. This year, the designs were to be inspired by Chicago music; including original looks that represented electronica, jazz and alternative.

After a most productive day at Agency Galatea, I made my way over to the Chicago History Museum - an incredibly beautiful venue for such an event. I arrived and while waiting for a drink, the fantastic Taneisha Jordan (Second City Style) tapped me on the shoulder and joined me in line. We caught up for a bit before mingling over to Miriam Cecelia Carlson (one of my faves), who was chatting with a few of her adoring fans. Across the way, I saw the lovely Candace Jordan (Candid Candace) and went to see her and receive a big smooch before I gladly accepted her offer to have my photo taken. I was excited to get a glimpse of Abby Zupancic (CFF Board member and producer of the show), who stopped me to gab about how things were going backstage.

After catching up with everyone I could, the show was ready to begin. I took my seat (thank you, Meghan for the stellar view!) and listened to CFF Board President, Kristen Amato, as she introduced the concept of the contest and introduced the judges: talented designer (and friend) Lara Miller, 24/7 Chicago’s beautiful Catie Keogh, the lovely Amanda Monteiro (formerly with Giorgio Armani) and Chicago's very own Candace Jordan. Before long, she also introduced Peach Carr (Project Runway Contestant - Season 8 and an official host of the event) who shared her excitement and voiced her support of the Chicago designers. After a few words from Peach - and applause from the waiting crowd - it was time for the show to begin...

I sat quietly and watched the plethora of designs glide past me on the runway. Each look showcased a different point of view and you could really feel the musical inspiration in each piece (as well as the excitement inspired by the Florence + The Machine track I was seat-dancing to during the first looks.) I kept my eye on the judges (trying to guess which look lifted their eye) as each one-of-a-kind design walked past them. After a fantastic selection of garments made their way down the runway - it was time for the winner to be announced. Coming in third place was Rebecca Lopez from Columbia College, who created an ensemble inspired by The Maxwell Street blues and in second was K’Lynn Kennedy from the International Academy of Design and Technology for her ‘Classical Edge’ design. The coveted first place scholarship of $5000 was awarded to Ana Leon, a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago who sent a satin silver gown down the runway, inspired by Chicago’s jazz scene.

The event was another great success for the CFF and the local designers the foundation hopes to expose - certainly one of my favorite events this season. Congratulations to all of the participants - as well as the winners - and I wish them continued success in their journey to becoming top designers, proud to call Chicago home.

"Beg, Borrow and Steal" - Artfully Disheveled at John Allan's

A couple months back, while clutching the metal rail on the Brown Line train, I got an email on Facebook from a beautiful woman named Maria Ponce. If you are not familiar with this smart and exotic individual - allow me to fill you in: Maria is an extremely talented photographer who divides her time between Chicago and New York shooting commercial portrait work, as well as fashion. She has shot for many stellar Chicago publications - including her most recent work photographing all fifty of Chicago Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful Chicagoans." (Check out the rest of her hotness by clicking HERE.) Anyhow - Maria introduced herself (as if I didn't know who she was) and began to tell me about an amazing new line of neckties, pocket squares and bowties (she knew her audience) in Chicago. Clearly - I was listening (aka: I began to read faster.) As I read more, the name of said line immediately intrigued me: Artfully Disheveled. Right away, I knew had to learn more and I quickly found out the story behind this young lifestyle brand...

While staying on his brother Trey’s couch in Chicago, Chris Berre thought up the idea for a new line of neck wear that would speak to the modern gentlemen who shared a flair for style that told a story. The brothers soon reached out to a friend named Palmer, who shared their passion for quality and timeless style choices - and before they knew it, Artfully Disheveled was born. In it's debut collection titled "Beg, Borrow and Steal", the lifestyle brand features thoughtful accessories "geared towards the urban professional, the eager student, the aspiring artist and any style minded individual." The debonair Look Book describes the concept behind the name of the brand, explaining that Artfully Disheveled is "rooted in the Italian philosophy of Sprezzatura," and "is a contradiction by definition. Artfully Disheveled is for the man who desires a look that is sophisticated but not subdued. That is stylish but not stuffy. That is classic but not conforming."

Once I knew the story, I immediately reached out to Chris Berre (thanks to Maria's introduction) to learn more. He was such a gentleman and he quickly invited me to an event at John Allan's to meet himself and his brother and get a look at the collection. I arrived at the event that Thursday night and found Trey and Chris who were incredibly warm and welcoming. We discussed menswear in Chicago and I shared my excitement for their young brand. I was lucky enough to walk away with my own "The Sharps" bowtie, which I immediately tied with pride. After a cocktail or two and some excellent conversation, it was time for me to head out - but not before snapping a few photos with the guys. (These things are essential.) I want to congratulate Trey and Chris for having the courage to begin this new Chicago brand. Starting a venture such as theirs takes dedication, vision and patience. Our fine city is in need of more individuals such as themselves that foster a passion for style and the motivation to make an idea come to life. I look forward to the next collection from Artfully Disheveled and I know for certain that the collars of my shirts will be waiting for their next line of bowties.

The Ted Baker-London Grand Opening

On a particularly dreary (London-esque) day, I tightened my bowtie in the Agency Galatea office, shut down the computer and made my way to the elevator. Once at street level, I saw Katie McLenaghan smile at me through the glass - one eye covered with that gorgeous blond hair of hers. I gave her a smooch, we hailed a cab and we were off to see Ted. (Well, kinda.) Arriving a bit early, we walked a few windy blocks and discussed the future of Chicago fashion and Katie schooled me on her favorite legendary socialites of times past and present. (Candace Jordan: Yes, my love - you were a lovely topic of conversation!) Finally rounding the corner of Oak and Rush, we arrived for the event: The Ted Baker London Grand Opening.

Once inside, I was blown away by the gorgeous interior of the store. It has tons of personality and once I found my way to Mr. Michael Corrigan (Friend and Publicist - Zapwater Communications), he explained that the concept was planned as if a heavy wind had blown the decor from the walls the farther back you moved into the space. (You'll have to check it out for yourself to know what I mean.) Once I quit fawning over the decor, I had the chance to get down to business and speak to the women behind the brand: Joni Kilmurry (Ted Baker London’s Marketing & Press Guardian for the West Coast, Gail Dobinson (Ted Baker London Head of Marketing & PR) and Jodie Kilmurry (Ted Baker London Marketing Manager.) First of all - these women were not only sweet as can be - but they each had their own eccentric style and I could have talked to them all night. They explained to me that the quality of the fabrics/stitching/buttons, as well as a dedicated attention to detail (and a quirky sense of humor) is what sets Ted Baker apart from it's competition. (I later learned that the very first stores would provide a laundry service for every shirt purchased and that Ted shops would give away a can of Paxo stuffing at Christmas. See? Quality and a sense of humor.) When I asked Joni to tell me one sentence that best describes the Ted Baker brand - she didn't miss a beat: "‘No Ordinary Designer Label." Quite frankly, I'd have to agree.

After a fantastic chat, it was time for the ladies to speak to other press - and for me to move on to the bar area. I snagged a drink, finagled my way through the crowd and planted a kiss on Megan Taylor's cheek (my favorite lady DJ from one of my favorite Chicago creative companies - Fig Media.) She was playing a to-die-for mix of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" and she quickly told me where to get it. (Just click the link above!) After a few words with her, I ran into the lovely Sonya Jackson - who was busy shopping up a storm. (Loved that black dress on you, gorgeous!) As I flipped around from Sonya's dressing room - I was thrilled, as always, to see the handsome James Goeke and Kevin Aeh chatting it up. I looked up and coming through the crowd was the ever-popular Mr. Justin Jacobson (with a beautiful lady, of course.) To his right was the stunning Corri McFadden (an appointed Chicago Brand Ambassador for Ted Baker, if I may add) and the "EDrop-Off Girls" (yes - they have quickly become a sexy little group of celebs, if you ask me.) After a few words with Jena Gambaccini, I ran into Lynne Bredfeldt from the Park Hyatt (also a Chicago Brand Ambassador) who is always so sweet. Basically, friends - you get my point: this party was packed with the best of the best!

After catching up with everyone, it was time for me to head out and meet my Julie Darling at Frontier for drinks and to learn a bit about Rodan + Fields (if you're not in the know about this company - get in the know. They are pretty much taking over.) If I had stayed for a bit longer, I would have been a part of the double-decker bus action that shuttled all of Ted's friends off to Public House. Grrrr! (Maybe next time?) Either way - I had an absolute blast at the Ted Opening. If you haven't already left your house to go check this place out - I suggest you do. I guarantee you'll find something you love - and if you don't - I'll take you for a spin in a double-decker bus to make up for it.

Maven Presents "The Divo Series" - Honoring Successful Chicago Men

When I first received an email from Sarah Vargo (Maven, LLC), I have to admit - I was quite excited. She stated that she was planning an event to honor successful Chicago men and that she had wanted me to be a part of it. (Ok, I was more than excited - I was downright tickled.) The event, called 'The Divo Series,' was aimed at bringing together men who excel at their work in each of their respective industries. Presented at the Foundation Room at Chicago's own House of Blues, the event was sure to be a solid night of networking, good friends and getting to know some of my fellow Chicago Divo's.

I arrived with some of my favorite people around 6p.m. and quickly found a comfortable spot in one of the Foundation Room's private areas. I was pleased to have been accompanied by my boss, the Marie P. Anderson (Fashion & Beauty Director - Agency Galatea), as well as my lovely assistant Kate Jacobsen and good friends Amy Harper, Callie Greenwood and Katie Gallagher. We quickly got to work chatting it up with the attendees and working the room. Mr. Steve Starr (also a Divo!) was working his camera magic with that big Steve Starr smile. Jason F.C. Laws (yep - a total Divo) and I hit up the bar and surveyed the crowd. Tyler Curtis quickly 'camerambushed' (my new coined phrase for Tyler) us in our private room with his entourage (such a Divo.) I ran into Benjamin Cottrell - another fellow Divo - and we caught up on conversation. All around the room, men (and the ladies who love them) were enthralled in chatter and laughter - exactly what Ms. Vargo had intended, I'm sure.

Before the night ended, I ran into a few of my favorite people, including Jessica Bergman, Fayshell Fajardo and Abby Zupancic. Many thanks to Sarah Vargo for planning such a great event and to everyone who came out to say hello and tip a glass. I know that without all your love, I couldn't be the Divo I am today.

A while back, I received an email from Michael Corrigan, a friend and publicist for Zapwater Communications, asking for my address. I was a bit intrigued, as Michael and I had not known each other very well at the time, but I was aware of his position (and hey - you never know what a well-connected publicist may send you.) I shot him back the info he requested of me, went on with my day and forgot all about it - until a month or so later...

I had just gotten home from the office and my roommate pointed to a package on my desk and said - 'That came for you.' I picked up the package, which had been wrapped in thick brown paper and slowly peeled it open. Inside, a long, skinny, flat black box was waiting with my name, address and 'Bowtie Memoirs' written on it in white. (I had to take a moment and collect my excitement, as I had never received a package like this before.) On the center of the box was a small piece of fabric ruler that held it tightly closed - almost hugging it shut. I slipped off the ruler, opened the box, unfolded the wrapping tissue - and gasped. Inside, was the super-coolest, most awesomest, triple-radical invite I had ever received. (Apologies for the high school verbiage - but seriously, though.) There were three small booklets with the words 'Sebastien Grey Clothiers' printed on them, full of information about the company that I had already started to fall in love with. The booklet in the middle held a cuff-link and a metal collar-stay inscribed with the same words and printed simply above the cuff-link, was the time of the event and the address. I immediately remembered Michael and insisted that this must be his doing - though, I wasn't completely convinced until I found out for sure.

Now - I know you don't want to hear the story of an invite - you came here to read about the launch of a new brand, right? But, I can't speak about Sebastien Grey without touching upon the time and attention that went into the invite, such a seemingly simple process. This, my friends, is a perfect metaphor for what Sebastien Grey Clothiers stands for: attention to detail and exquisite personal touches...

I arrived at the Loop location - 70 W. Madison - around 4:15p.m. on Thursday for the media preview (I was lucky enough to get in early to check out the bespoke brand before the public got their eyes on it.) If that address seems familiar, it is no mistake, as Sebastien Grey Clothiers are located exclusively inside of Chicago's popular HALO [FOR MEN] salons. I was greeted by Michael himself and got right to it - checking out the selection of suiting and the many choices that could be made. HALO [FOR MEN] and Sebastien Grey work wonderfully together to give the full service that a stylish man wants and deserves. It's simple, really. Allow me to lay out the steps:

1. Get a dashing haircut. (Damn, you look good.)

2. Get a consultation. (You don't have to do this alone.)

3. Pick out every detail that you want. (You, are a man of power.)

4. Come back in about four weeks for another haircut and a fitting, just to be sure. (That custom suit hugs you in all the right places.)

5. One to two weeks later - it's done. (Who knew looking this good was so friggin' easy.)

There you have it, guys. Can you say convenience?

You can't go wrong with so many choices to choose from - be it the cut, the fit, the fabric, the color of the thread that wraps the button holes - you get the point. Sounds pretty good right? 'Ok, Mr. Bowtie' - you may be asking yourself - 'so how much?' Well, hold on to your hat - 'cause even that is customizable! The prices are tiered, depending on the quality of the fabric and the first level starts at only $799 - for a custom suit! (Insanity.) From there - you can elevate the fabric quality, step by step until you are at $1099, then $1499, then $2000. It really depends on what you want and how you want your suit to feel (and drape on the body.) Now, I can talk all day about how great Sebastien Grey is, but you have to go and check it out for yourself. I promise you wont be disappointed with the service and quality of these gorgeous threads. In fact, the consultant I spoke with described the Sebastien Grey experience quite perfectly - she said, 'Our standard is the other suit-maker's upgrade.' So, there you have it - exceptional service, exquisite fabrics and the perfect fit. The only thing left to figure out is how you want your hair cut.

While working at the agency, I received an email - just before Christmas - from a woman named Sophie Lin. The email certainly wasn't unusual, but what I didn't know at the time, was how the email would change my life. Now, this sounds like quite a dramatic way to begin an event post - I realize this. But, looking back, I'm so glad I responded to Sophie...

In the email, Sophie introduced herself to me as one of the individuals behind a line of menswear called J.Cheikh. I immediately checked out the website (as I'm sure you did just now) and instantaneously fell in love with the collection. The interesting cuts, rich/royal colors, the way the pants fell a bit short on the model - all made me swoon as I clicked through each look. This was a collection after my own heart. A line of menswear that (if given the chance) I would literally sleep in, only to wake up and slip into another J.Cheikh look the next day.

As I corresponded with Sophie to book my runway models for her upcoming show, I began to grow fond of our conversations. We went back and forth many times (which often happens with my clients) until she asked me one day to be on the hosting committee for her event: The Chicago Launch of the F/W 2012 J.Cheikh Collection. I quickly agreed (actually, I think I squealed like a girl right there in my office) and went to work inviting my top list of industry friends and contacts. Before I knew it, I was corresponding with press about the show and RSVP-ing some truly amazing attendees to cover the event. By accident, I became Co-PR Pro for the event! (These things happen.) I quickly hooked up with the wonderful Grace Lin (Sophie's sister and the real PR/Marketing Pro behind J.Cheikh) and we got to work on the guest list.

In preparation for the event, Sophie pitched to me an impromptu photo shoot with one of my Agency Galatea guys named Colin Ryan. Once we knew Billy Rood (Fig Photo/Ender Films) was shooting the new F/W 2012 collection on Colin, he quickly agreed. The shoot went stunningly well and Colin did an excellent job - giving his best in front of Billy Rood's camera that day. A few days later, as we all stood in the J.Cheikh studio, we got a look at the images and were blown away. (Behind-the-scenes photos and post to come!)

As the day of the event quickly approached, the RSVP list was filling fast and needed to be cut off. (Being 150 over capacity is a good indication that the list must close.) We did just that and proceeded to prepare the press seating arrangements for the show. The evening quickly approached and I started on my way to Loft on Lake to assist with last minute details and help get everything in order. Upon arrival, I greeted my Galatea guys (Dominique Lark, Chris L., Benjamin Paulsen and Colin Ryan) and got the seating arrangements confirmed. I spotted Kyler Powell of Kyler Powell Designs securing the final touches of the staging and the lighting - and before we knew it, the doors were open and the guests began to arrive. The room filled quickly, photographers were crowding and everyone had taken their seats. It was time for the show to begin.

The host for the night, along with my friends, D.C. Crenshaw (Game Time Dine/Deals with D.C./Fete Select TV), Henrique Kerch (Factio Magazine) and Katarina Visnevska (Violinist - Lyric Opera of Chicago), was one of my favorite guys in town - Mr. Marcus Riley (NBC Universal). He took a moment to introduce the brand before Katarina played an exciting violin set to the beats of tracks spun by DJ Galvan. Once the sounds of her violin came to an end, the F/W 2012 J.Cheikh show began. Before our eyes, we saw a collection of suits, woven shirts and slacks that looked as if they had been plucked from the set of Mad Men (or the streets of Vegas, circa 1950.) Golden paisley brocade, deep blue velvet and slick black painted the collection as each step was taken toward the photographers. Fox pelts hung carelessly over the shoulders of each model - almost hinting at a sexy, yet subtle cocky confidence of a man that would wear such a distinctive suit.

When all the looks had hit the runway and the finale walk had been taken, it was clear that we all had been a part of something special that night. I was later asked by a friend from The Working Wardrobe for a quote about what I thought of the show, which I will share with you here: "I would absolutely say that the show last night offered a breath of fresh air to the somewhat ignored arena of menswear in Chicago. J.CheikhCheikh suit, I can confidently tell you that I walk taller when I'm wearing it. For a man such as myself that stands six feet, four inches - it's quite a compliment to the designer. This brand is my absolute favorite right now and I am thrilled to say that I have become fast friends with the entire J.Cheikh team. They truly work with talent, passion and dedication as they remain focused on elevating the Chicago fashion community - a mission dear to my heart. I can't wait to see what lies ahead for J.Cheikh!" And that, my friends - is the truth.

Many thanks to Cheikh Lam and Sophie Lin - the husband and wife team behind J.Cheikh - as well as Grace Lin and Van Dang - for allowing me to be a part of something truly special - right here in Chicago. The Holiday Hangover @ The Underground - Chicago

As the Director of Runway at Agency Galatea, I have the honor of representing so many talented fashion/runway models, (as well as working with stellar hair/makeup artists and wardrobe stylists.) What you may not know, is that Agency Galatea is located inside of a very successful on-camera and voice-over agency called Grossman & Jack Talent that has been representing some of the best actors in Chicago for over 18 years. To confuse things even more, there is another brand under our roof called G&J Models, which represents lifestyle/commercial models for advertising clients (as oppose to fashion or runway, like Galatea.) Got all that?

In celebration of the New Year and the hard work that each and every one of our models and actors perform every day, we wanted to throw them a little soiree. So - we did just that. Lindsay Glickstein (On-Camera Agent - Grossman & Jack Talent) and myself worked our little butts off to plan a winter event that was both tons of fun and philanthropic. To get the party started, we joined forces with Mr. Jon Landan (Director of Marketing - Rockit Ranch Productions) and Sofia Cristina (Marketing/Special Events Intern - Rockit Ranch Productions) and decided that The Underground - Chicago was going to be the place to host the event. Lindsay decided that we would partner with a charity close to her and her family's heart called Becca's LEGacy to create a toy drive for the event. Becca's LEGacy is a charity that fights to raise awareness about childhood cancer, raise funds for research to cure childhood cancer and collect new toys to give to hospitalized children with cancer. We couldn't have been more thrilled to help.

Once we had our venue and charity in place, it was time to find our liquor sponsor to really get the party going. Enter: Annie Skourup and Jim O'Connor - my friends from Apostrophe Brands. Their generosity must be noted, as they hooked us up with a great spiced rum called Kilo Kai - which went over really well. (Thank you, both!) Once all that was squared away, it was time to complete the final aspect of our event: the guest list. With such a pool of beautiful talent, it was easy to fill the room with notable guests and stunning beauties. One by one, the RSVP's came back - and before Lindsay and I knew it - we were decked out and ready to rock.

Finally, on the evening of Thursday, January 13 - the doors to The Underground opened at 8p.m. and the guests began to arrive, quickly filling the place up with contagious energy. From wall to wall, the room was packed with friends and family of the agency. Everywhere I looked, I saw smiling faces, people swapping smooches and hugs all around. What can I say? We had created a love fest. The night rolled on and the Kilo Kai flowed and the dancing began. Melissa Gonzalez, (Receptionist/Actress - Grossman & Jack Talent) was spotted juking her way across the dance floor (as usual.) Katie Gallagher, Callie Greenwood, Heather Newman, Samantha Hicks and a few of my other best girls were spotted dancing on their seats and stirring things up. Joshua Alexandre Haines (Alexandre Industries) was the tease of the night - flashing his tank top at me from across the bar (yeah - I'm calling you out, Haines!) You getting the point yet? We had a total, utter, complete blast.

When the party settled down, it was well after 1a.m. and we had collected nine huge bags of toys for Becca's LEGacy. The event was one of the best we have thrown yet for the agency and we can't wait to do it again. As someone who is new to the modeling industry, I am overwhelmed with the amount of love and support that each and every person who enters our office shares with me and one another. It truly is a family and we stick together. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out that night to share a drink, have a laugh and give back to children with cancer. It's each and every one of you that make me jump out of bed, excited to go to work every day.

Holy smokes - it has been too long, my friends! Even now, as I began to type the date, I slip and write '2010' before correcting myself and editing it back to '2011.' A whole new year? So much has happened since I last posted and I must first apologize for being away from you for so long! I can assure you that I have been busy making connections and creating new opportunities to share with you here. So, let me fill you in...

As you all know, the holidays came and went - and with them, was the one year anniversary of the very first Bowtie Memoirs post, called 'And so it begins...' It was one year ago on November 5, 2009 that I sat down and began a journey that has taken me to some of the most fantastic events in Chicago and connected me with some of the most stellar individuals I have ever had the honor of meeting. So, although a little late - please join me in wishing my baby, The Bowtie Memoirs, a very Happy 1st Birthday! Without your support, I couldn't continue to bring you the best in fashion and industry events that this city has to offer. So, a big 'THANK YOU' to you, Chicago!

In other news: I have recently began a new endeavor into the world of podcasting. Recently, I joined three fabulous women - all Chicago fashion professionals - to begin our very own podcast! Affectionately named, Speaking of Fashion, our podcast "aims to inspire communication about fashion and it's place in our every day lives." Each voice brings something different to the coffee table - featuring Rachel Yeomans (Social Engagement Consultant, publisher/editor-in-chief of TheWorkingWardrobe.com and RachelYeomans.tumblr.com), Tenisha Anderson (editor-in-chief of Qlix Magazine), Kari Skaflen (editor-in-chief of Above the Fray) and myself (Director of Runway for Agency Galatea, editor-in-chief of The Bowtie Memoirs). Well, my friends, I think that is it for now. I certainly appreciate the patience you offered while I took some time to re-group after the holidays. On a personal note, I would like to also thank all of my friends and family who have supported me through one of the biggest challenges of my life: quitting smoking. Today, I am proud to say, is my nineteenth day without a cigarette and I have never felt more confident, motivated and enthusiastic about the smoke-free life ahead of me. I know that, just by making the choice to quit, I have changed the course of my life. (Which I find to be pretty awesome.)

Moving forward, I urge you to keep your eyes on The Bowtie Memoirs, as I will have new, exciting event posts coming up for you very soon! Dress Code - Fashion Focus Chicago - 2010

Chicago's Fashion Focus events were in full swing by Thursday and I had the chance to join some of Chicago's finest at the Dress Code runway show in Millennium Park. I arrived with Paige Ann Peterson and Kiran Advani showed us to our seats in the press section. Dress Code is one of my favorite shows during Chicago's fashion week, as I get to have a look at the design work from the four top local art colleges to see who is up-and-coming on Chicago's fashion radar. This year, the theme of Dress Code was "Off the Grid", and the students were to design "sustainable, repurposed clothing that blends fashion and the environment." The four schools represented were The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago and The International Academy of Design and Technology. The entire show was produced by none other than Chicago fashion icon (and my dear friend), Nena Ivon, and I was honored and excited to get a look at each collection.

The show began right on time and I put my camera to use almost immediately to catch some images of the designs for you. I was able to capture most of the looks by each designer and was impressed with the creativity and talent seen on the runway. Below is a look at the collections produced by each designer - but this time, I want to know what YOU think of the designs. Borris Powell Runway Show - Spring/Summer 2011 - "Life of Two Fairies"

The wind was whipping through the Chicago streets as Paige Ann Peterson and I reached the doors of the Drake Hotel for the Borris Powell S/S 2010 Runway Show. We were a bit early, so we sat in the beautiful lobby and caught up for a bit. Once it was time, we ascended the stairway to the Palmer Room to get a first look at the space. We ran into Borris, who was trying to figure out last minute seating details (mine, to be exact.) We said hello, wished him well and grabbed a drink at the bar. The guests started to arrive and I said hello to the beautiful G&J Model and my friend, Jenner Evans (Obsessed with your glasses, by the way, Jenner!) - and was able to chat for a moment with the fabulous Abby Zupancic (Zzazz Productions), as well as Richard Gamble (Publisher - Chicago Magazine) and Melissa Gamble (Columbia College Chicago).

Once the show was to be begin, I took my seat, grabbed my pen and waited in excitement. The music began shortly thereafter as forest scenes with rivers and trees played on the back screen. The first model appeared, 'fairy ears' and all, and the show was off to it's start. Borris' theme, "Life of Two Fairies", was inspired by obsession with romance and was displayed through his collection in subtle details, as well as with his choice of models. Simply put - according to ChicagoFashionResource.com, "The playful and romantic collection is inspired by a legend of two fairies falling in love despite coming from different backgrounds. The runway show [brought] the inspiration of the collection to life and [told] a tale of innocent love entangled by good and evil."

Borris designed a collection filled with details of fantasy - which could be seen in his patterns (leaves, vine-like prints, etc.) and his cuts (one mini trench, in particular, looked as if he had plucked it off of Tinkerbell.) His color choices were also used to drive home his theme - featuring moss greens, deep purples, warm lemon tones and fiery red. The fountain in the Palmer Room hinted at the sounds of a river running through and the gorgeous flowers that stretched their arms out over the fountain added a burst of life to his show. He presented an array of looks - from trench coats, to fitted dresses, to voluminous cocktail looks - all the way to his final gown, complete with a train. Borris has had the opportunity to present his collections in New York and London Fashion Week this year and I was honored to sit front row at the showing of his S/S 2010 collection, here in the finest city I know.

It was finally time for the last of three events of the night... But, wait - there's a story: Earlier in the week at the W Hotel event, one of my friends stopped me to whisper in my ear on the way out. She asked what I was doing Tuesday and I told her that I had been booked all evening. She then whispered that I should make myself available later in the night for a really stellar event. She said that Kanye West was screening his new film, "Runaway" and that I would get an invitation shortly. It all seemed to secretive and I had trouble believing it - until I got an email from Marc Moran (@superfun) at 11:00p.m. that same night that simply read:

At first, I wasn't sure if I wanted to extend my 12 hour day for a few more hours. From what I had seen about Kanye in the past, I wasn't even sure if I had any interest in it. After thinking it over, I figured - you only live once. It would be an experience, if nothing else...

As Todd and I jumped a cab from the Ritz, we talked about what it may be about - as we had no clue what we were walking into. We arrived at the Icon Theater on Roosevelt shortly before 10:00p.m. and were let into the corridor area to be checked in. After some time and a few minutes catching up with Marcus Riley (NBC Chicago) and Nicole Townsend (City's Best), we were let up the stairs to check our phones, as they were not allowed into the theater. Once our phones were checked, we stood in line to be checked out by a police officer with a security wand. (It was quite the operation.) We finally got let up for a couple cocktails and shortly after, we were let into the theater (after more security wand-ing).

We sat patiently and waited for something - as we had no idea what we were going to see. I had a chance to catch up with one of my Agency Galatea models, Megan Lewis, and before we knew it - Kanye West was standing 6 feet in front of us. It was a bit surreal to see an individual that you know only through TV and radio standing right in front of you. He was incredibly modest and spoke about his journey and the growth that he had done in this past year. He talked of his dreams and how the film that we were about to see was just that - a dream of his. He commented on the negativity and powerful manipulation of the media and his desire for us all to break away from listening to everything we hear or see or read. Most importantly, he spoke to us as an individual, like any of us. He connected to each of us, and for a moment he wasn't the successful, world famous Kanye West - he was just another human being with a point of view.

The film began after Kanye expressed his passion for the project and how it all came to be - and it was breathtaking. I can't exactly put my finger on one aspect of the film that made it so amazing - or the experience. I'm not sure if it was the words he had just said, the power of his music playing throughout, or knowing that I was one of about three hundred people in Chicago to be seeing the film - but it inspired me in so many ways. After the screening, he spoke to us again, choking back tears as he talked about his younger days in Chicago and of the path that lies ahead for him. He was respectful and funny and human - and I found myself dropping everything I "knew" about him at that very moment. He perfectly ended his impromptu speech with two sentences that truly spoke to the blogger in me who strives to expose Chicago fashion and the people and the talent to the rest of the world. He said quite simply, "Being from Chicago, there is so much we can do... Because they don't see us coming."

And he's absolutely right.

I left the theater that night filled with energy and inspired by the experience I had just been given. People may doubt us as a city, or doubt you as a person - but there is no limit to what you can achieve. It's up to no one but yourself to create the life you want - and you can do it. I promise you.

My wish to everyone out there who thinks no one is listening and no one is watching and that 'it' - whatever your 'it' may be - will never happen:

Keep pushing.

Keep creating.

'They' will take notice.

DecadesTwo.1 Pop-Up Shop at The Ritz Carlton - Opening Night

Tuesday was quite a busy evening for events... Once the last look sauntered down the runway at Millennium Park (CFI Past & Present Designers Show) - Todd, Marie and I quietly made our way to Randolph Street to catch a cab and head to the next event. We arrived a few minutes later at the doors of the beautiful Ritz Carlton, got out of our cab and got checked in to head up to the DecadesTwo.1 Pop-Up Shop. Before we hit the elevators, Barbara Glass (who had just come down) greeted us in the lobby and raved about the clothing we were about to see. She looked amazing, as always, and I was so happy to be able to have a quiet moment to say hello to her. Once in the elevator, we couldn't resist taking a photo in the glass as we made our way up:

Once we reached our floor, we exited the elevator and made our way into a beautiful suite - dripping with racks of Dior, Chanel and many other fine designer goods as stunning as the room we were standing in. We had a chance to speak with Jesse Garza, co-writer (with Joe Lupo - also in attendance) of 'Work It' - a book that has gives women advice on what to wear to work. In the book, "Jesse Garza and Joe Lupo, stylists to the stars, reveal their tried and true secrets to looking professional and chic. With questionnaires, hundreds of photos, color swatches, and before-and-after shots, they make it easy for any woman to determine her specific 'worksonality.' Then they tackle the tricky questions: How much skin is too much skin? Is what I'm wearing to work preventing me from getting the position that I want and deserve? Are shorts ever acceptable in the office? (Spoiler alert: they're not.)" The authors signed copies of their book and talked with the exclusive attendees about the lessons inside.

Jesse and Joe - along with two of my favorite women, Lynn McMahan and Amanda Puck - welcomed DecadesTwo.1 and HauteLook as they stopped in Chicago for their recent consignment pop-up shop tour. All of the beautiful clothing was offered at greatly reduced prices and the suite was buzzing with women trying on furs and trying out handbags while the gentlemen relaxed and sipped wine. I got my hands on a glass and tried my best to keep my excitement to a minimum. (What? You'd be excited to see 30 Chanel blazers, too.) Once we said hello to everyone and had a good look, it was time to shuffle on to the next event. Like I said - it was quite a busy Tuesday...

CS Magazine & Macy's Present: The Chicago Fashion Incubator Designers Show - Past & Present

After a few hours of sleep and a full day of work it was officially time to start the Fashion Focus festivities! I tightened the bowtie, met my roommate Todd Starr Smith and my Boss Marie P. Anderson and we hopped a cab to Millennium Park. Once we arrived, Kiran Advani saved us from the daunting line and showed us to our seats. There we were - sitting in the press section, ready to have a look at the Chicago Fashion Incubator: Past and Present Show. This, the first of the runway shows at Millennium Park, was presented by CS Magazine and Macy's and featured looks from the 2008-2010 past CFI designers: Anna Hovet, Jess Audey, Nora del Busto, Agga B. Raya, Lidia Wachowska, Kate Coxworth and Kristin Hassan - followed by collections from the current designers-in-residence at the CFI: Leah Fagan, Christina Fan, Stephanie Kuhr, Donaldo Smith, Miriam Cecilia Carlson and Jonnie Rettele.

The show began with collections from past designers (followed by the current collections) and we saw 103 looks glide down the runway. I was able to scribble some thoughts for each of the collections and below is my take on what I saw from each. Special thanks to Dean Paul for his fantastic photography. Here we go!

Past CFI Designers:

Kristin Hassan:

Kristin Hassan - Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago alumni and former contestant on The Fashion Show - sent out a collection of playful dresses with a flirty feel to each. Her embellishments, such as handmade headpieces, exposed zippers and over-the-top broaches adorned her looks. Volume and polka dots were key to her collection.

Kate Boggiano (Kate Coxworth):

Kate Coxworth of Kate Boggiano played with tailored pieces that whispered of sweetness. Her fringe details and over-sized collars offered a hint of personality and fun to these somewhat business-like looks. She focused on deep necklines and simple details to add a softer sex appeal to her collection.

Evil Kitty (Lidia Wachowska):

Lidia Wachowska of Evil Kitty gave us a pretty collection that screamed of a rocker chick. This conflicting idea worked for this collection adorned with spikes, lace and safety pins. Her silk cocktail dresses and striped details gave a tough feel to your ordinary dress.

Agga B. (Agga B. Raya):

Agga B. Raya of Agga B. is quickly becoming one of my favorites from this year with her stacked fabric dresses and powerful silhouettes. Any high-powered business woman would die to wear her fur adorned looks and origami cut dresses. Here is a designer with a strong point of view and the talent to make waves in the industry.

Anna Hovet:

Anna Hovet constructed a series of tunics, tops and rompers in soft pastels - with touches of black for contrast. Her 'geek chic' theme was represented with big eye glasses and fingerless gloves that climbed up the models' arms. Her soft silhouettes and futuristic sportswear looked comfortable and easy to wear.

Nora del Busto:

Nora del Busto showed the crowd a collection of detailed dresses full of interest. Her cut-outs, exposed zippers and weaved fabrics gave the garments an extra level of designer touches. She added splashes of fuchsia and busy patterns to make her looks stand out.

Audey (Jess Audey):

Jess Audey of Audey designed an earthy, pretty collection of dresses and skirts with volume, color and pattern. Her collection was sweet and modest with a country girl feel to it. The models couldn't help but smile as they walked down the runway wearing her dresses - in cowboy boots, no less.

Current CFI Designers-in-Residence:

C/FAN (Christina Fan):

Christina Fan of C/FAN - who is known for her solid-colored basics that easily transform from day to night - has gone a bit tropical (and I love it.) Her collection this time around featured beautiful sunsets and beach scenes on chiffon - breaking away from the C/FAN norm, while still keeping the essence of the flowing, easy-to-wear looks that Christina is known for.

Killian Gui (Donaldo Smith):

Donaldo Smith of Killian Gui - one of two menswear designers-in-residence - sent out a collection of woven shirts full of extra details. Pearl buttons, raglan sleeves and pinstripes adorned his collection of well-made shirts. He played with color-blocking and Gingham check to add variety and a smart feel to his collection.

Alidade (Leah Fagan):

Leah Fagan of Alidade constructed an array of blouses, pants and cardigans that are easy to wear and comfortable. Her classic looks and asymmetrical cuts added ease to her collection and her cool color palette offered a fresh breath of air to her line.

Dottie's Delights (Stephanie Kuhr):

Stephanie Kuhr of Dottie's Delights always has vintage on her mind. This was clear in her sexy collection of bras, girdles and garters that made the audience take notice. She added pops of red and spiral details on bras to attract attention to all the right places.

Nonnie Threads (Jonnie Rettele):

Jonnie Rettele of Nonnie Threads has an eye for menswear (and for what I personally like). Her collection featured interesting cuts and layered looks that left me wanting more. The fitted wovens, slim-fit pants and collared vests added interest and depth to her stellar collection. One of my faves.

Miriam Cecilia (Miriam Cecilia Carlson):

Miriam Cecilia Carlson of Miriam Cecilia was the closing collection of the show - and she did so with a 'bang'. Her short dresses and long gowns feature mica - a mineral she hand-mines and uses to add detail to her dresses, or to make necklaces to perfectly complement her looks. Her white and plum strapless gown with a train (shown above) was the perfect choice for her finale - gorgeous!

After a long Monday at the Agency Galatea office, it was time to begin the madness: a week-long celebration of the fashion that our fine city has to offer. To kick-off Fashion Focus, now in it's sixth year - the Mayor's Fashion Council of Chicago held a swanky soiree at the W Chicago - Lakeshore, located on the 33rd floor in the Altitude Room. The view was brilliant - boasting cityscape views on the west side of the circular space, and offering a spectacular look at Lake Michigan from the east. I arrived early with my fabulous boss, Marie P. Anderson and we took in the scenes and the fashions that were displayed around the room. The party began to quickly fill up with the 'top dogs' of fashion and industry in attendance to begin the celebration. Many faculty from my alma mater, the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago, had attended the event as well and it was so good to catch up with Michael Johnson, Jill Hinrichs and Karen Janko.

As we sipped our 'fashion-tinis', we were treated to a stellar set of tracks spun by none other than DJ Matt Roan - one of Chicago's best DJ's (and quite the snappy dresser, if I do say.) I scanned the room and was overwhelmed with the amount of people I wanted to talk to - it was as if all my industry buds were in one place - yet so little time! I was so glad to run into James Goeke - sporting a killer emerald green leather coat - and his friend Royce Oliver, who looked dashing as well. Around another corner I spotted the wonderful Tenisha Anderson - Queen of Qlix Magazine, and Jada Russell - Head Honcho for High Style Marketing. Across the room I saw one of my mentors, Barbara Glass of InFashionChicago.com with Tracey Tarantino (Zzazz Productions) and Andrea Schwartz (External & Media Relations - Macy's North Division) - all looking lovely. Before I slid out into the cool October evening, I got a chance to give Kiran Advani (Spokesperson for the Mayor's Fashion Initiative) and Borris Powell (Owner - Borris Powell Designs) a big hug. (P.s. Kiran should get a medal for all the work she has done to keep Chicago fashion moving forward - and for being so cute.)

CS Magazine Presents: The Exclusive Calvin Klein & Carson Pirie Scott Pop-Up Shop

I arrived early with Julie Darling and Justin Meister at 116 West Hubbard Street for the VIP opening of the first-ever Chicago Calvin Klein pop-up shop. We were greeted by the stunning Samantha Saifer - Director of Marketing for CS Magazine (the official media partner for the event) - who whisked us in to grab a drink and catch up. The 1600 square foot space had been transformed into a hip shopping heaven, filled with the best of CK's threads. The brand had partnered with Carson Pirie Scott to launch the week-long endeavor, open to the public the next day for perusing and purchasing.

Adorning the racks were fall looks for both men and women, hand-picked by Calvin Klein's Global Creative Director, Kevin Carrigan. I had the opportunity to speak with Kevin for a moment to discuss the pop-up shop. He was very proud of the venture, stating that the line featured in the shop was an advertising pull - meaning every piece you see in CK ads were made available in the shop for the public. (Nothing is worse than trying to buy a garment from an ad, only to discover that the retailer doesn't carry it in that location!) He went on to tell us about the planning for the shop and his involvement in designing the interior and merchandising the beautiful space. Finally, Kevin shared with us some top secret information about future shop endeavors - which I must keep to myself. Wouldn't want to anger the forces that be at Calvin Klein! The event was an absolute blast and I was so happy to run into some of my favorite people, including James Goeke, Justin Jacobson (Platinum Events), Melissa Maynard De Kerch (Factio Magazine), Jenny Berg (BizBash), Agga B. (designer and stylist) and William Braggadocio (Men's Street Fashion - ChicagoNow) - among others! I'm sad to say that the shop has now come and gone, but Chicago is full of fantastic places to find your Calvin's. Unfortunately, you may not get to sip champagne while you try them on.

Qlix Is HERE (and there and everywhere).

September 22, 2010:

Over a year ago, I sat down to meet with a very motivated and talented woman, with a love for emerging fashion. (A woman after my own fashion heart.) We met at a Starbucks and she told me about a very special magazine that she was creating. This was the first time I had heard about Qlix Magazine. This creative format was one that I had never seen in any Chicago magazine - it was something fresh and exciting to our industry. Tenisha Anderson was her name, and Qlix Magazine was 'her baby'.

Time had passed, we kept in touch and then I received an invite that made me clear my evening immediately. It was the official (and very exclusive) launch party for the magazine's second issue. I arrived early at JBar with Paige Peterson and Miriam Cecilia Carlson and was warmly greeted by Jada Russell - Owner & Principal Publicist for High Style Marketing (also a great friend of Tenisha's and event planner). We sipped a cocktail, had a bite to eat and looked through Qlix while waiting to hear Tenisha speak. As stated earlier, the format is much different than other magazines. Instead of your typical format, Qlix is laid out like a series of posters and collectors cards. This allows the reader a much different experience when reading, as well as a piece of art to keep for yourself (see below).

When it was time, Barbara Glass - a very special woman, blogger and great friend - took a moment to introduce Tenisha and the magazine that she has poured her heart into. Once complete, Tenisha - publisher/editor-in-chief/founder of the mag - told us of her passionate journey from Day One to today. After tears were wiped away (by most of the crowd), the event resumed and the fabulous folks shared drinks, laughs and a bunch of hugs in celebration of this day and all the work that Tenisha has accomplished.

On a personal note, I want to thank Tenisha for inspiring our industry to push forward and create something that has never been done in our city. Her persistence and drive is a testament to anyone who has a dream that they hold deep inside. I am so proud of all the work that she has done - while never giving up - and I am honored to call her my friend.

Keep pushing, Tenisha!

Islands of the World Fashion Tour

I woke up Tuesday morning already excited for the day ahead of me. Not only was it my birthday (yes - I had to add that in here somewhere), but I was thrilled that I had been invited to one of my favorite types of events - a fashion show. But this show was a bit more special than your average, with collections from featured designers from 'The Islands'. Fittingly named, 'The Islands of the World Fashion Tour', this group of designers was set to pack the house at Loft on Lake for a runway show presented by none other than Factio Magazine.

I arrived after work at the agency with my trusty event side-kick and best bud, Paige Peterson, and we quickly ran into Factio editor-in-chief, Melissa Maynard De Kerch and her charming husband (and Publisher/CEO/Founder of Factio), Henrique Kerch. We chatted for a bit, grabbed a drink and had our picture taken by one of my favorite photographers, Steve Starr. The night was hosted by a handful of my favorite people; including Corri Mcfadden (eDrop-Off), Candace Jordan (friend, socialite, blogger), Kristen Fredricksen Skordilis (Koros) and Trevian Kutti (G'bani) - among others. After catching up with everyone, we took our seats and prepared for the show to begin.

We were treated with gorgeous collections from four talented designers, starting with handbags by Harl Taylor BAGS from the Bahamas, followed by designs from Nadya of Bali, K-Bobby from Jamaica, and Eric Raisina from Madagascar. We had an amazing view of the show and I was able to film each collection for you to enjoy as well. (Consider it a 28th birthday gift from me to you.) Now, I'm off to the Bahamas! Well - maybe next year...

eDrop-Off Grand Opening Event

What do you do when last season's Chanel bag needs an update, but cash is a bit tight? Before you open a lemonade stand and hope for the best, why not give eDrop-Off a try! Last Wednesday, I was excited to attend the Grand Opening event for the new location of "Chicago’s premier independent eBay drop-off store", eDrop-Off, and mingle with some of my favorite people. The interior of the new space, located at 2117 N. Halsted, is gorgeous. Floor to ceiling windows and chic interior details made me feel like I was in a hip loft party. Even the back work areas were beautiful (especially owner, Corri Mcfadden's amazing office that I want to work in every day). I had received the invitation from friend and Factio Magazine editor-in-chief, Melissa Maynard De Kerch, and I was thrilled to see her when I arrived and catch up. Many industry friends were in attendance, including the fabulous Jenny Berg (Bureau Chief, BizBash Media), my new friend Emily Hopp (PR/Special Events, Neiman Marcus), and the gorgeous Julie Selakovich (Director of Marketing, Saks Fifth Avenue) who I spotted across the room, but didn't get to say hello to. (Hello, Julie!) After exploring the space and taking full advantage of the photo booth with my date Paige Peterson, we were off with swag bags in hand. Another great event, and a stunning new store. But, don't take my word for it... Clean out those closets, collect your designer duds, and head over to eDrop-Off and let the helpful (and really good looking) staff take care of you. Just make sure you don't leave your lemonade stand unattended.

The Goorin Bros. Hat Shop Opens in Lakeview!

The Goorin Bros. Hat Shop celebrated another Chicago location in Lakeview this month, and I was excited to attend the opening event on a hot summer night. I arrived with friends and grabbed a cocktail, while mingling with some of my favorite people. We perused the eccentric summer collection of hats and listened to the sounds of the live band. Friend and Store Manager, Drew Dallas Deardorff, greeted us shortly after we arrived with a hug and a smile - just the kind of service that this hip hat shop offers to it's patrons every day. A portion of the proceeds from the event went to Ravinia Festival's Reach*Teach*Play Program and guests could enter to win a trip for two to Hawaii! (What better place to wear your new hat than on a sandy beach?) The event was a success, and judging by the amount of hats on top of heads, it was clear that everyone had a good time. Congrats to Drew for all his hard work. Lakeview is lucky to have a great guy like you - and a stellar store like Goorin!
